In Lazio region, the olive cultivation covers about 86 thousand ha of land surface, the olive mills are over 300 with a production of 22 thousand tons per year. Lazio boasts some excellent olive oils with protected designation of origin (Canino PDO, Colline Pontine PDO, Sabina PDO and Tuscia PDO) and with BIO certifications. From a careful analysis it has emerged that only 5 Lazio companies are starting to support an eco-friendly policy but none of them has an environmental certification such as EPD or PEF. The small companies, herein considered, do not have a budget allowing to require a certification or even to have a life cycle analysis (LCA) unit. Universities and research centers could fill this gap by developing projects in collaboration with these small companies that could then put an environmentally sustainable products and therefore more appealing it on the market.
